The founders of Staffing Specialists, Inc. are also the authors of the publications listed in the section titled, "Books". We are a man and wife team, one being a registered nurse and the other an administrator, who in May 1977 over dinner in a Mexican restaurant decided to go into business for themselves. At the time the husband was executive in a construction company, who knew that the construction business was too dependent on the overall economy of the country. The wife, a registered nurse, was tired of floor nursing and was looking for a new area of nursing where she would still feel fulfilled as a registered nurse. We also wanted a business that there would be a future need, no costly inventory to worry about, had a high reorder potential, and could be owned and managed by a person who had minimal medical experience. This is why we decided on a medical staffing agency.
We saw a need for a temporary nursing service that could handle the requirements of its clients no matter what they requested: from around-the-clock private duty to hospital staffing. We felt that this service demand should be handled in a flexible, responsive manner, providing care at a level necessary to meet both the patient and client needs, in the most effective manner. We understood the value of our field employees, whereby they needed to be treated with respect. We also knew we would have to work hard to obtain them the best assignments to meet each employee's skills and work schedule, while insuring that each employee was paid on time and for the correct amount.
We knew that it is the individuals who own and run a staffing agency that make it work, not the name of a franchise or a licensee. In addition, by not buying a franchise or becoming a licensee also gave us the flexibility and the competitive edge we were looking for: no franchise fee or licensee fees, no restricted business area, no mandatory meetings, no mandatory stationery, brochures, office space, markups, etc.
In July of 1977, we opened our first agency in a small office with a leaky ceiling and little working capital.
Our concept of treating our clients and field employees with the same respect quickly caught on, whereby within a year our company grew to be one of the largest medical staffing companies in a large metropolitan area with extensive and advanced health facilities.
To test our system of starting and running an agency for our banker, insurance agent, attorney, and accountant we once opened a second medical staffing company within a block and a half distance from our original company. We kept our ownership silent from the public so that the new staffing agency under different management would become one of our competitors. To the surprise of our banker, insurance agent, attorney, and accountant this new staffing agency grew almost as fast as our original company, proving that we could open an agency in any city no matter what competition there was. As a direct result of our systems and abilities, we started and operated agencies in three other states.
Today, after selling our other medical staffing companies, we only have our original company, whereby we oversee the daily operations. This way we can keep current of any new trends and/or conditions that could affect the medical staffing business. In addition, we are constantly monitoring the staffing industry, identifying possible exposures to the business, and looking for alternate methods of meeting the needs of our customers.
As owners/operators of an independent medical staffing agency, we have performed every task required in the operation of any agency, since 1977.
We have gone through many changes over the past twenty-eight years. Some of these changes were good and some not so good, but we have proven that we can adapt to change.
We have helped many clients and employees from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean, who to this date still keep in touch even though they are no longer a client or employee.
The past twenty-eight years have given us the experience, dedication, knowledge, stability, flexibility, and longevity that few individuals can boast about.
